Blackburn Science Centre
At the start of the Michaelmas term 2010, Bradfield College opened the doors to its brand new Blackburn Science Centre. The building, which was designed by Chartered Architects, MEB Design Limited in Oxford, and built by local building contractor, Feltham Construction Limited, now provides a superb facility for the teaching of all three sciences in a single building.
The new science centre, which uses the very latest in sustainable design technology, includes 10 sophisticated laboratories, three classrooms and three prep rooms. The design and construction of the building makes a strong statement as to its purpose. In keeping with its location in the beautiful Pang Valley, its ‘green roof’, photo-voltaic panels, biomass heating system and exclusive bat loft are all likely to prove attractions to many of the young scientists who will visit it for research purposes. It offers teaching facilities designed for the new century, with a focus on hands-on learning and technology geared to the direction of modern scientific practice.
This latest development will ensure that Bradfield continues to be a centre of excellence for science and that it will play its part in reversing the national decline in the number of young people studying and teaching the sciences. In addition it will also provide the opportunity for local primary schools to use the facilities.
In order to help monitor the environmental benefits, the College has produced a Live Energy Display which gives real-time data about energy consumption (water, lighting and power, heating) and the savings achieved as a result of the building's environmentally-friendly design. The display also gives details of the various construction stages of the project.
