Post-results services following Public Examinations (Summer 2010)

The Examination Boards offer a Post Results Service which allows access to photocopies of exam scripts, the return of original scripts, clerical checks and re-marks. All services must be administered through the Examinations Office at Bradfield College and, are only applicable to the June 2010 exam series.

If on receiving examination results (19 August A/AS Level, 24 August GCSE)  your son/daughter is particularly unhappy with the Grade or Mark it may be worth pursuing a result enquiry. The candidate ought to be aware that an enquiry may result in subject grades being confirmed, raised or lowered. It is important to remember that unless the total marks indicate that the next grade up was only narrowly missed, it may not be advisable to proceed with an enquiry. This should be discussed with the relevant Head of Department or Housemaster/mistress before proceeding with an enquiry.

All enquiries carry fees which are payable by the parents unless on completion, an enquiry results in a change in the overall Grade. For candidates who have not cashed in (ie: have not been awarded an overall subject grade in the subject concerned), fees will not be incurred where the enquiry leads to a change in the notional unit grade. A consent form must therefore be completed and returned to the Examinations Officer before any enquiry will be initiated.

Access to Scripts

a)    Access to Scripts: Original (ATS/O)

Original scripts may be used for reference and analysis.  Sometimes the Head of Department may wish to request copies of certain scripts to help with future teaching.  This will be done at the College’s expense though permission must be sought from the pupil.  Once an original script has been returned it is not possible subsequently to request a re-mark in any circumstances.

b)    Access to Scripts: Photocopy (ATS/P)

These may be requested to help make a decision to pursue an enquiry.  Photocopies of the scripts will be sent to Bradfield College by the Board and forwarded as appropriate.

Enquiries about Results (EAR)

a)    Service 1 – clerical check

Available to all candidates:  This service is used to check that the marks on the script have been correctly totalled and correctly recorded.

b)    Service 2  – re-mark

Available to all candidates:  The candidate’s written scripts are re-marked by a Senior Examiner in addition to a clerical check.  It is possible to request the return of photocopies of re-marked scripts in conjunction with this service.

c)    Service 2 – priority re-mark

For A Level students only, this applies only where a University place for October 2010 is dependent on the change of result.  This service must be requested within a week of the publication; no later than Friday 27 August and must be accompanied by a cheque.  The review will be completed within 18 days from the submission of the request to the awarding body.  Photocopies of re-marked scripts may be requested in conjunction with this service.

There is an appeal process but it is only possible to appeal against an examination board’s failure to comply with due process.  It is not possible to appeal against the marks awarded by a board.  All appeals must be made through the school and should be discussed with the Deputy Head or the Examinations Officer.

Re-sitting examination modules

Pupils who have left the College may be permitted to return to re-sit one or more modules at a subsequent examination session.  A fee will be charged for the provision of this service that will cover the entry fee, invigilation and administration costs.  The College will not be responsible for providing transport, accommodation or victuals for these candidates.

Candidates choosing to re-sit an examination should seek permission from the Headmaster in writing, before making the application to the Examinations Officer.  The application should contain the details of the module(s) to be sat including, the subject, the paper title, the examination code and examination board.  Candidates should be prepared to pay all entry fees in full before the entry is made.

When considering whether or not to attempt to improve a grade by re-sitting the following points should be borne in mind:

  • No tuition or support is provided to candidates re-sitting examinations.  They may negotiate separately with teachers but this will be a private arrangement.
  • Not all AS modules (new specification) are offered in the January session.  There is an online, interactive examination timetable available at www.modernisationonline.org.uk/comptimetable/ to check the dates, times and confirm availability of each module.
  • The Examinations Officer needs to be informed by the end of September of any intended entries for the January Series.
  • There will be no opportunity to re-sit old specification A2 modules
