  Drama

Drama at the College is open to all pupils and aims to release the creativity of the pupils through preparation for live performance.

The College's studio space presents a mixture of contemporary and classic drama in a typical year, as well as an annual musical and performances of new writing. Each year the College sends a production to the Edinburgh Festival. There are two Faulkner's plays and a Shell play annually and the College usually stages between ten and twelve whole school productions a year, some of which are directed by pupils.

The department also runs a Drama Club in which the theatre technician runs a workshop based on his experience of over ten years as a professional actor, dancer and ‘auteur’. This is a demanding course for those who wish to take their drama experience beyond the usual limits of school drama. We also invite professional actors to run individual workshops with a more general appeal.

The work of the Drama and Theatre Studies pupils is also open to the College. Examination pieces often attract considerable audiences, and the Upper Sixth devised pieces usually involve an evening with a question and answer session between cast and audience.

Every three years the College produces a Greek play from the classical age in the original language. The tradition goes back to the nineteenth century and has only been interrupted by the two World Wars. This has a national appeal and provides pupils with a chance to better understand the work of the great Greek tragedians, and to perform to a large audience composed of the general public, rather than the College community.
