 Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards for entry at 16+  

Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards are awarded annually after competitive examinations and performance assessments in November of the year prior to entry. All Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards are subject to continued good behaviour and industry. All are intended to support deserving candidates and may be considered for augmentation up to 100% of full fees if need be shown at any stage, subject to completion of a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances.

 

All Scholarship, Exhibition and Award candidates are expected to attend both the general Assessment Day and relevant Scholarship, Exhibition or Award day in November.

 

Assessment / Scholarship, Exhibition and Award dates for 2011 candidates

 

The 2011 Lower Sixth Entrant's Assessment Day will be held on Saturday 13 November 2010.    

  

The 2011 Lower Sixth Sports Awards, Dr Gray Exhibitions, Performing Arts Awards, Music Scholarships, Art Awards  will be held on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 November 2010.

 

The 2011 Lower Sixth Academic Scholarship will be held on Wednesday 17 November 2010. 

  

Academic Scholarships

 

Up to five are awarded annually.

 

The Academic Scholarship examinations comprise three written academic papers: General English and Mathematics (45 minutes each) and a Specialist Subject paper (90 minutes) in the academic subject of choice (this must be a proposed A Level subject). In addition there are formal interviews with the Headmaster and the Admissions Tutor. Academic Scholarship candidates should be predicted predominantly A and A* grades in all GCSE subjects.

 

Music Scholarships

 

Up to three are awarded annually up to 50% of fees, plus free tuition on up to three instruments.

 

Candidates are required to meet the following criteria: to offer two pieces of at least Grade VII standard in their first instrument and be able to offer a second instrument; to play at sight; to do aural tests of Grade VI-VII standard; and to sit a theory paper with the aid of a keyboard (the grades correspond to those of the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music). In addition there are interviews with the Headmaster and the Admissions Tutor. Music Scholars are expected to study Music at A Level and to participate fully in all College music activities as well as to play a part in organising and leading music in their Houses.

 

Dr Gray Bradfield Exhibitions

 

Up to three are awarded annually.

 

Candidates are expected to exhibit a degree of academic prowess combined with talent in the fields of Sport, Music and Performing Arts, or any combination of these. Those offering Music should play at least one instrument, or sing, at Grade III standard or higher and have experience playing or singing in ensembles at their previous school. The academic component comprises an IQ test and Maths and English papers. Candidates have an interview with the Headmaster about their wider interests and an interview with the Admissions Tutor.

 

Art Awards

 

Up to three are awarded annually.

 

Candidates spend time in the Art Schools doing a series of practical exercises and discussing their work with the Director of Art. They should bring a comprehensive portfolio including sketchbooks and any 3-D work or photography where relevant. Textiles and Photography are offered as A Level subjects and consideration is given to candidates wishing to specialise in these fields. In addition there are interviews with the Headmaster and the Admissions Tutor. The essential qualities looked for in prospective Art Award holders are an obvious passion for the subject, self-motivation and evidence of sensitivity, sound observational skills and developed imagination. Art Award holders are expected to study Art at A Level.

 

Sports Awards

 

Up to five are awarded annually.

 

Candidates are expected to be outstanding in one or more sports and to make a significant contribution to this area of College life. The assessment at the College focuses on the candidates’ chosen sports as well as their general sporting prowess. Should candidates wish to be observed prior to this, early submission of entry forms is necessary. In addition there are interviews with the Headmaster and the Admissions Tutor.

 

Performing Arts Award

 

One is awarded annually.

 

Candidates are expected to be outstanding in Dance or Drama, or both, and to make a significant contribution to this area of College life. The assessment at the College focuses on performance and candidates should also bring a comprehensive portfolio detailing their involvement to date. In addition there are interviews with the Headmaster and the Admissions Tutor.

 

All Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards are announced on 1st December when offers of places are made.
