Welcome from the Headmaster

I have always strongly believed that having the opportunity to educate other people's children is a rare privilege that brings with it a responsibility to provide the best all round education that we can as we aim to prepare young people for success in a fast changing world. At Bradfield we take this responsibility extremely seriously. We care about the individual and we pride ourselves in the warmth of a community in which young people feel happy and valued. We seek to create an environment of high expectations in which all our pupils are encouraged to believe in themselves, to be inquisitive, to be resilient and to show ambition both within and beyond the classroom.

The College ethos aims "to inspire our pupils to become confident, contributing and caring members of the new global community" and to this end we actively promote personal integrity, tolerance, understanding and independence of thought. We encourage young people to work with and learn from each other, as well as to show moral courage to stand up for what they believe in. The breadth of a Bradfield education supports our pupils in challenging themselves and develops their abilities to communicate with others. I am determined that our community will remain self-aware, outward-looking, open-minded and innovative in its approach to all things as we strive to fulfil the responsibility that we have been given.

Our Values

  • Our pupils are all individuals and will be treated as such in a supportive and compassionate community which is fully committed to promoting equality and diversity in all aspects of life;
  • Young people should see themselves as being at the centre of an education which is done for them and with them, not to them by their teachers and their parents and such an approach will empower them to become intellectually curious so as to maximise their achievement;
  • Above all else we want our pupils to be happy and safe in an inclusive environment, which delivers a sense of self-fulfilment through achievement and which enables girls and boys to understand, respect and appreciate each other within a co-educational community;
  • Our pupils are more likely to be happy if they develop into intellectually and socially confident individuals who display humility and the highest standards of personal integrity, who are able to communicate and collaborate with others, having achieved a degree in ‘common sense’;
  • Academic achievement is vitally important in terms of opening doors to future opportunities, as is approaching life’s challenges with commitment and enthusiasm. Developing emotional intelligence and personal well-being are as important in determining future success and happiness;
  • Young people achieve amazing things within a climate of high expectations and ambition in which they are inspired, listened to and trusted to take responsibility for themselves;
  • Young people must be expected to show the maturity and the resilience to learn from their experiences and fear of failure must not be allowed to stifle opportunities to flourish;
  • Our boarding environment enhances opportunities for active engagement with College life beyond the classroom and such engagement is fundamental to our desire to nurture creativity, develop leadership, promote initiative, value team-work and friendship and ensure physical and emotional well-being;
  • It is vital that young people develop a sense of social responsibility and an open-minded and outward-looking mentality if they are to play a positive role in serving their wider community.
