The Bread March

Below Liam Hess (G) gives an account of the recent production of his own original musical, The Bread March.

After last year's The Fall of the House of Usher, I began to think about a project for my last play at Bradfield and decided to attempt something more ambitious: to write and compose my own original musical.

My fascination with the French aristocracy and, in particular, the plight of Marie Antoinette was a starting point I kept returning to, and upon reading Antonia Fraser’s popular biography last year, a plot began to materialise based around the last days of the Ancien Régime. Of course, with a musical the priority must be to communicate a good story, but that does not mean one has to compromise on its integrity. There are a number of contemporary issues raised within the piece, for example the potential for moral decline in an era of prosperity and the injustice of a rigid class system.

It was a fantastic experience and I would like to thank Mrs Crossley and Mr Nowicki for their support.
