PASTORAL CARE Boarding life at Bradfield is a natural extension of family life at home; our accommodation and pastoral care are of the highest standard and we are actively committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children at the College. All pupils are under the care of a Housemaster or Housemistress, their day-to-day mentor and guide, who is responsible for looking after them throughout their time at the College

In support of each Housemaster or Housemistress, there is a dedicated team of Matron, House Tutors and Academic Tutors. Housemasters, Housemistresses and Matrons have access to regular pastoral training, and are expected to complete the BSA’s Certificate of Professional Competence on appointment; all employees receive annual training on Child Protection procedures. Round the clock medical cover is provided by qualified nurses at the College’s Medical Centre and there are daily doctor’s surgeries.  In addition, the College employs two qualified counsellors who work alongside the medical staff, supporting the house team; a full-time Chaplain completes the pastoral picture.

If things go wrong, pupils are encouraged to talk about their concerns with their Housemaster/mistress.  If they do not feel things are dealt with as they would wish, the Second Master, who oversees pastoral care in the College, is always ready to talk things through with pupils and to take matters forward on their behalf.  All pupils are taught that they have the option to make a complaint in this way and to have the expectation that it will be taken seriously and dealt with properly. They are also taught that they may take matters further if they feel it necessary – either to the Independent Advisor nominated by the College (Caroline Packham 0118 964 4745), or to OFSTED (08456 014772). During the last academic year the College received two formal complaints from pupils, both of which were resolved by the Second Master without the use of a complaint panel, and no formal complaints from parents.

Faulkner's

College life begins in Faulkner’s, an innovative, purpose-built house catering exclusively for boys and girls who join Bradfield at the age of thirteen.  The dedicated team of staff provides sensitive guidance and pastoral care of the very highest quality, building on the happiness and success of years at Prep School, and supporting pupils as they begin senior school in a fully coeducational community. It is here that we lay firm foundations for the future, so that the confidence of the boys and girls is enhanced as they establish their own identities within the freedom and space of a home environment.

Senior Houses

After their first year in Faulkner’s pupils move into their senior house, one of eleven senior houses at the College. The focus on providing the highest standards of pastoral care continues as the pupils mature within the College community, with a dedicated team of tutors and resident matrons supporting each Housemaster and Housemistress in all senior houses.

Sixth Form

To become a member of our vibrant Sixth Form is an exciting transition.  Many boys and girls - including international students - choose to join the College at this stage.  Bradfield offers a generous range of options at AS and A2 Level, as well as preparing pupils for life at university and beyond. During these two years an increasingly adult approach is taken, both in the classroom and towards extra-curricular activities.  Our Sixth Formers are role models in the College community and we expect them to demonstrate responsibility, both in their academic and personal lives.  We believe it is equally important that they continue to broaden their horizons through outside interests, and to extend their ambitions so that they become the self-assured, articulate and motivated individuals for which Bradfield is renowned.
