Neil Burch, Deputy Head (Academic) explains how St Andrew’s facilitates the ‘Life of the Mind’ segment of the Education Strategy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gilbert-Scott\u2019s tacit re-design brief in the 1840s will have been to create a space that honoured something that went beyond the material and the physical and that\u00a0<\/span>chimed with the institution\u2019s beliefs and interpretation of something more existential.\u00a0 Our plans today are premised on a similar responsibility, albeit guided by a different mission.\u00a0 So much more than a beautiful, contemporary building design, St Andrew\u2019s is a concept.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"St Andrew\u2019s is squarely a teaching and learning project; a reflection of Bradfield\u2019s curriculum and a manifestation of what we see as our responsibility to prepare our pupils to work and study in the 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u00a0century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

St Andrew\u2019s will have books \u2013 over 13,000 books \u2013 but will not be a library;<\/strong><\/p>\n

it will have spaces that can be booked by teachers but where the teacher will merely be the facilitator not the \u2018sage on the stage\u2019; <\/strong><\/p>\n

it will offer\u00a0coffee\u00a0and refreshments but will not be a refectory; <\/strong><\/p>\n

it will have a hum of industry and collaboration but\u00a0also space for silence and independent work.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pen and pad will be reign just as much as the ubiquitous wifi.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Corporate and commercial practices, in the context of the pandemic of the <\/span>past 15 months, have shone the brightest of lights on this project and its importance for the College in terms of the pupil<\/span>s\u2019<\/span>\u00a0experience.<\/span>\u00a0 \u2018Blended\u2019 and \u2018flexible\u2019 are operative words:\u00a0 St Andrew\u2019s is not a single environment but a blend of spaces where each supports a different type of individual or group work<\/span>\u00a0for over 160 pupils.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018boardroom\u2019 will allow\u00a0<\/span>for discussion and debate<\/span>\u00a0whilst the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018think tank\u2019\u00a0<\/span>offers a tiered seating forum for our pupils to present<\/span>, whether that be\u00a0<\/span>A level<\/span>\u00a0pupils and their<\/span>\u00a0work for the Extended Project Qualification or\u00a0<\/span>elements of the IB Diploma Programme \u2013 Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n

Bradfield\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Attitude to Learning\u00a0<\/span><\/i>curriculum\u00a0<\/span>asks its pupils to Think Creatively, Help Yourself, Reflect and Respond, and Review<\/span>.\u00a0 As is the case in the re-designed ground floor of the Blackburn Science Centre<\/span>\u00a0and soon the first floor of Bloods, pupils will use St Andrew\u2019s \u2018Share Space\u2019 to\u00a0<\/span>work collaboratively, share and iterate ideas<\/span>, online and offline.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>imposing but sympathetic<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 aesthetically beautiful<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 glass walls<\/span>\u00a0in the nave\u00a0<\/span>mean t<\/span>eaching and learning can be seen all around you<\/span>, the belief being that\u00a0<\/span>it is an immersive experience where best practice is role-modelled, particularly between those at the top of the school<\/span>\u00a0and younger pupils<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, this mirrors\u00a0<\/span>the design philosophy seen in Science, Geography, English and RS.<\/span>\u00a0 Pupils in the\u00a0<\/span>quiet reading area will see the busyness of the discussion spaces\u00a0<\/span>but also\u00a0<\/span>the grind and focus of those working independent<\/span>ly<\/span>\u00a0in the central space that\u00a0<\/span>run<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through the core of the building<\/span>, from nave to sanctuary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

St Andrew\u2019s is a concept<\/span>.\u00a0 The project very intentionally targets\u00a0<\/span>the \u2018Life of the Mind\u2019<\/span>\u00a0strand of Bradfield\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Education Strategy<\/span>.\u00a0 Qualifications as they stand are under intense scrutiny but remain\u00a0<\/span>important for all manner of reasons.\u00a0 Bradfield understands, however, that\u00a0<\/span>education in its purest goes well beyond A*s and Grade 9s.<\/span>\u00a0 Our responsibility is\u00a0<\/span>to develop in pupils a love of learning for learning\u2019s sake<\/span>; learning for the sheer enjoyment of the academic pursuit,\u00a0<\/span>supported by brilliant teachers, inspired\u00a0<\/span>by the buildings they study in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
