In light of\u00a0the successful\u00a0completion of\u00a0the purchase of St Andrew\u2019s Church from the Oxford Diocese and Church Commissioners\u00a0in September, the College has\u00a0now launched the news of the plans for St Andrew\u2019s across\u00a0the\u00a0Bradfieldian community.\u00a0The acquisition by the College secures the future of the historic Grade II* listed building which is intimately tied to the College\u2019s history.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUniting St Andrew\u2019s Church with the College offers an exciting and fitting future for a building of great architectural merit. We look forward to ensuring this beautiful building becomes a vibrant space once more so it can inspire a new generation of Bradfield pupils.\u201d Dr Christopher Stevens\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the article below\u00a0Neil Burch, Deputy Head Academic, shares his view of St Andrew\u2019s, not\u00a0just\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0building, but\u00a0as\u00a0a concept.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gilbert-Scott\u2019s tacit re-design brief in the 1840s will have been to create a space that honoured something that went beyond the material and the physical and that\u202fchimed with the institution\u2019s beliefs and interpretation of something more existential.\u202f Our plans today are premised on a similar responsibility albeit guided by a different mission.\u202f So much more than a beautiful, contemporary building design, St Andrew\u2019s is a concept.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

St Andrew\u2019s is squarely a teaching and learning project; a reflection of Bradfield\u2019s curriculum and a manifestation of what we see as our responsibility to prepare our pupils to work and study in the 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u202fcentury.\u202f St Andrew\u2019s will have books \u2013\u00a013000\u00a0of them\u00a0\u2013 but will not be a library; it will have spaces that can be booked by teachers but where the teacher will merely be the facilitator not the \u2018sage on the stage\u2019; it will offer\u202fcoffee\u202fand refreshments but will not be a refectory; it will have a hum of industry and collaboration but\u202falso space for silence and independent work.\u202f Pen and pad will be reign just as much as the ubiquitous\u00a0wifi.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Corporate and commercial practices, in the context of the pandemic of the past\u00a020\u00a0months, have shone the brightest of lights on this project and its importance for the College in terms of the pupils\u2019\u202fexperience.\u202f \u2018Blended\u2019 and \u2018flexible\u2019 are operative words:\u202f St Andrew\u2019s is not a single environment but a blend of spaces where each supports a different type of individual or group work\u202ffor over 160 pupils.\u202f\u202fThe \u2018boardroom\u2019 will allow\u202ffor discussion and debate\u202fwhilst the\u202f\u2018think tank\u2019\u202foffers a tiered seating forum for our pupils to present, whether that be\u202fA level\u202fpupils and their\u202fwork for the Extended Project Qualification or\u202felements of the IB Diploma Programme \u2013 Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Bradfield\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Attitude to Learning\u202f<\/span><\/i>curriculum\u202fasks its pupils to Think Creatively, Help Yourself, Reflect and Respond, and Review.\u202f As is the case in the re-designed ground floor of the Blackburn Science Centre\u202fand soon the first floor of Bloods, pupils will use St Andrew\u2019s \u2018Share Space\u2019 to\u202fwork collaboratively, share and iterate ideas, online and offline.\u202f The\u202fimposing but sympathetic\u202f\u2013 aesthetically beautiful\u202f\u2013 glass walls\u202fin the nave\u202fmean teaching and learning can be seen all around you, the belief being that\u202fit is an immersive experience where best practice is role-modelled, particularly between those at the top of the school\u202fand younger pupils.\u202f Again, this mirrors\u202fthe design philosophy seen in Science, Geography,\u00a0English\u00a0and RS.\u202f Pupils in the\u202fquiet reading area will see the busyness of the discussion spaces\u202fbut also\u202fthe grind and focus of those working independently\u202fin the central space that\u202fruns\u202fthrough the core of the building, from nave to sanctuary.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

St Andrew\u2019s is a concept.\u202f The project very intentionally targets\u202fthe \u2018Life of the Mind\u2019\u202fstrand of Bradfield\u2019s\u202fEducation Strategy.\u202f Qualifications as they stand are under intense scrutiny but remain\u202fimportant for all manner of reasons.\u202f Bradfield understands, however, that\u202feducation in its purest goes well beyond A*s and Grade 9s.\u202f Our responsibility is\u202fto develop in pupils a love of learning for learning\u2019s sake; learning for the sheer enjoyment of the academic pursuit,\u202fsupported by brilliant teachers, inspired\u202fby the buildings they study in.\u202f St Andrew\u2019s is\u202fthe concept\u202fto enhance\u202fthe way our\u202fpupils\u202fstudy and work together, fit for\u202fthe adult world ahead of them.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
