Boys’ hockey in the Lent Term is always action packed, and this year has been no different. With a multitude of fixtures across 14 teams squeezed into just 11 short weeks, the pupils have once again shown remarkable progression in a very small space of time. This development was perhaps most evident in the Boys’ 1st XI, who delivered one of the strongest campaigns in recent seasons recording 13 wins and producing a superb cup run to the quarter finals. Their journey included impressive victories over Radley, MCS, Abingdon and Eton. The team were led superbly by Joey (A), who combined with Miles (D) formed a deadly duo at the top of the circle scoring numerous penalty corner goals at crucial moments throughout the season.
The Boys’ U16A and U15A teams both had encouraging seasons. Despite not picking up the wins their performances deserved both teams started to play a free flowing brand of hockey characterised by crisp passing and intelligent movement off the ball. As their tactical awareness grows, and as they continue to develop physically and mentally there is genuine excitement about what these groups will achieve as they move up through the school. A special mention must go to Dr Brook’s U16B team who were the only team to go through the season unbeaten, playing some fantastic hockey along the way.
The Boys’ U14A team entered the season with plenty of raw talent but limited experience. Through hard work, willingness to learn and steady growth throughout the term, they developed impressively and were rewarded with an excellent 3rd-place finish at the regional finals.
The U14 girls also provided one of the highlights of the year winning the tier 2 nationals just before half term. A fantastic achievement for a team that only came together in September with every single one of the team contributing throughout an historic season.
Amongst all the team successes there have also been some individual achievements that deserve a shout out. Jess (M) and Miles (D) have both been picked to represent England at the 6 nations tournament over Easter. Jess also made her premier league debut for Reading Hockey club. Elsewhere, Charlie (E) has been selected as part of the Wales U18 training group and Jemima (M) made her national league debut for the Reading 2XI scoring a goal on debut in the process.
Finally, a huge thank you goes to the teaching staff and coaches who are on the astro week in, week out, across both this term and the last. Their commitment creates the positive, supportive and enjoyable learning environment that allows our pupils to maximise their potential.
With another exciting term behind us, our attention now turns to preparing for the 2026/27 season, which promises to be another successful year for Bradfield Hockey.
