Approximately 600 years ago the printing press arrived. We’ve never looked back. Four centuries later, the combustion engine arrived. We’ve never looked back. 40 years ago saw the arrival of the internet. Initially dismissed by many…we’ve never looked back. Now that AI has arrived…
At Bradfield, we don’t believe it is a matter of whether we embrace AI or not, it is a matter of when and to what extent. Hype aside, AI will change how we work and interact with the world around us. That being the case, our pupils need to be at ease with this technology.
‘Technology’ is perhaps a red herring. Accessing Copilot or ChatGPT is simple. How we get the best from it is the skill. How we get the best from it is a very human pursuit, one where the user demonstrates their understanding of audience and context, where they are discerning of facts and assertions, where they critically interrogate and challenge unethical, biased output.
Schools and educators are now navigating a challenging context: upholding the integrity of public examinations by preventing the misuse of AI, yet conscious of our responsibility to develop pupils’ AI literacy so they are as ready as possible for the world that awaits. Both are non-negotiable.
